Two students browsing in the University of Melbourne bookstore:

First student: “You don’t read books, though?”

Second student: “Not necessarily… You know… just… bits of books…”

    lol – I’m not actually trying to pick on the students :-) I do know that this is fairly common (and, of course, all of us read “bits” of books when trying to decide what books we’ll read in detail). I think, to be honest, the exchange struck me so strongly because I’ve been writing intensively, and in the process thinking so much about the interrelation of parts of an overarching argument – there’s an element of… mortality, in a way, in being reminded that this is, very likely, how whatever I will produce will ultimately be read… :-)
