I overheard a discussion the other day between a group of academic staff who are heavily invested in university governance, who were concerned about a proposed method for workload planning that doesn’t include a method for recognising contributions like committee work, public service activities, and non-formal writing. One worried specifically about how the proposed system would provide disincentives for academic staff to engage in any activities other than those which confer “credit” toward work planning. They captured their concern in an interesting phrase:
We all know who this will benefit: you know the type – those people who have never spoken an unpublished word.
